Microwave Ovens

All Microwave Ovens Are Not The Same

One modern convenience that has found its way into virtually every modern kitchen in the world is microwave ovens. These make it much easier and quicker to prepare many meals as well as providing a rapid, convenient method of reheating leftovers. While almost everyone has one, it is important to note that they are not all the same.

First, there are different sizes of microwave. One should choose based on the size of dishes one anticipates needing to prepare. In general, smaller is better because cooking times are slightly shorter when the food is closer to the microwave emitter.

The second major difference is in the power used in heating the food. A 1200 watt oven will heat faster than a 1000 watt oven of the same size and capacity. Therefore, many people desire a higher power rating because they do not want to wait longer than necessary for their meals to be prepared.

Another major difference that goes unnoticed in many instances is the placement of the oven. Most homes have a traditional countertop microwave. These are, by far, the most common variety and can be easily found and purchased in a number of outlets. However, for those with limited space, the option exists to purchase an over the range microwave that is installed and hardwired in above the regular cook top.

Other than placement and how it reaches its power supply, there are no major differences in these two types of oven. Both are available in a range of sizes and power ratings.

In most cases, a popular brand name oven will perform in the exact same manner as one from another manufacturer if it is the same size and power rating. Therefore, it does not really matter if one has a GE microwave or a Panasonic microwave when preparing meals inside. Therefore, manufacturers offer different features to make their products more appealing.

Some units now combine the options of microwave and convection cooking into a single oven. In most cases, it is a choice between regular microwave heating and convection baking, however, some top end models allow for both types of heating to occur at the same time. This feature is especially useful when cooking meats because most do not brown properly when cooked with straight microwaves.

One can also choose from models with a simple twist dial timer or a full array of computer controlled presets and a digital display. The more automatic features one chooses to have included, the higher the price will be for the unit.

Choosing the right microwave oven for your kitchen is a matter of deciding what types of food preparation will be done using it and how simple or complex you want the options to be. One thing is certain. A microwave has become an integral part of every modern and fully equipped kitchen in the world. They make food preparation much faster and easier in a world where most people work outside the home and do not have time to spend hours preparing meals.
